Making miniatures is a venerable old movie making technique just like rear screen projection. I recently watched the beginning of Citizen Kane, and from what I gather the establishing shots of the palace were of a miniature. Another good example is the beginning of The Bride of Frankenstein, there is a wonderful shot outside in the thunderstorm dollying up to the window of the castle. Cool looking stuff. There are numerous examples, some good and some not so good.

The problem is nowadays many of these fascinating (yet not always 100% convincing) shots are abandoned in favor of digital effects. You do it all with the computer using the latest state-of-the-art effects package and then watch your film age very quickly. I think the best of both worlds is using the technology, but also not being afraid to add the production value of a detailed miniature.

...that stuff about the miniatures sheds a little light on the subject, thanks for the insight.

...all previous entries edited out of respect of this board, let the unedited ones stand for standing members to be a little more inviting when new members arrive.

Listen, I'm new to this forum, but it seems like a quote from "the usual suspects" is in line here. "

Fenster: Whyd ya haveta go andu dat? Im tryinda make a point

*Keaton: then why dont you make your point, your making me tired all over

Nick, for what it's worth, I think it's a cool idea, one everyone (including the people in this forum) has had man.

Not illegal to do on someones private property, and contrary to what most are thinking as they read this right now, there are people that have good size clifts on there property. I know a few.

heres some extra food for thought (and this is directed to all including myself as I need the reminder from time to time)

My father told me once, "between stimulus and reaction, there is a space. A space where choices are made."
